![]() Kamien works on physics problems in that have a strong connection to geometry and topology and encourages his students to understand problems as mathematicians do. #Whats physics science how to“We are dealing with how to formulate physics questions so it can be seen as a mathematics problem” says physicist Mirjam Cvetič. This fundamental difference leads researchers in both fields to use the analogy of language, highlighting a need to “translate” ideas in order to make progress and understand one another. You have to understand everything completely, then you do a computation.” “But in mathematics, the computations are just a decoration on top of the cake. Physicists “want answers, and the way they get answers is by doing computations,” says mathematician Tony Pantev. While physicists rely heavily on math for calculations in their work, they don’t work towards a fundamental understanding of abstract mathematical ideas in the way that mathematicians do. Instead of experiments or observations, mathematicians use proofs to support their ideas. Mathematicians look for patterns and develop new ideas and theories using pure logic and mathematical reasoning. In contrast, math is focused on abstract topics such as quantity (number theory), structure (algebra), and space (geometry). Questions are addressed using combinations of theories, experiments, models, and observations to either support or refute new ideas about the nature of the universe. ![]() As the systematic study of how matter behaves, physics encompasses the study of both the great and the small, from galaxies and planets to atoms and particles. Instead, mathematicians use proofs, a logical argument that shows that something is true.īut despite their close connections, physics and math research relies on distinct methods. #Whats physics science seriesOne can manually calculate additional values in the series, but it’s impossible to prove that this pattern exists beyond this series without infinite calculations. A simple example of a mathematical pattern: Mathematicians look for patterns and ask if that pattern is just a special case or indicative of something deeper. For mathematicians, physics can be a source of inspiration, with theoretical concepts such as general relativity and quantum theory providing an impetus for mathematicians to develop new tools. For example, Newton invented calculus to help describe motion. ![]() For physicists, math is a tool used to answer questions. Math and physics are two closely connected fields. Advances in geometry, string theory, and particle physics, for example, have been made possible by teams of researchers who speak different “languages,” embrace new research cultures, and understand the power of tackling problems through an interdisciplinary approach. At Penn, long-running collaborations between the physics and astronomy and the math departments showcase the importance of interdisciplinary research that crosses traditional boundaries. ![]() With many complex scientific questions still in need of answers, working across multiple fields is now seen an essential part of research. Math, chemistry, physics, and biology were grouped together for many years under the umbrella “natural philosophy,” and it was only as knowledge grew and specialization became necessary that these disciplines became more specialized. But uniting different academic disciplines is far from a new concept. In the scientific community, “interdisciplinary” can feel like an overused, modern-day buzzword. ![]()

![]() ![]() Confusingly, the only rapping guest to appear on any track other than the all-star remix is Ruff Ryders refugee Drag-On, who turns up on "Bust Ya Gunz" and who's only barely a better rapper than Swizz. It's over in roughly half and hour, which barely gives the energy any time to lag. The album is short: Ten songs, one obligatory all-star remix, and one pointless voicemail message from Snoop Dogg. He delivers all his lyrics in a breathless bark and repeats himself constantly: one song after "chillin' in my Beamer, listening to 'Ether,'" he's "cruisin' in that Lambo, lookin' like Rambo." He sounds utterly elated to be rapping, blissfully unaware that virtually every line is a certifiable clunker. In fact, Swizz's clumsy-ass rapping has a sort of goofily naive charm to it. Built on top of a luminous sample of the joyous burlbing bass from Bill Withers' "Take a Picture", the song works as a loopy, euphoric grin, even if Swizz doesn't do much more than brag about his funny. "Top Down", meanwhile, swirls riotous bursts of 70s-soul horns and strings around one another.īest of all is "Take a Picture", which slightly slows the tempo without losing the album's sense of exhilaration. Follow-up "Money in the Bank" is even busier and nearly as inspired its tire-screeches, stadium-drums, finger-snaps, stadium-chants, bass-rumbles, and squeaky sped-up vocals somehow cohere into something simple and infectious. The album's best songs are meaningless shots of adrenaline built on the dizzy energy of that first single. The album works because Swizz for the most part internalizes the lessons of "It's Me, Bitches", camouflaging his weaknesses and sometimes even turning them into strengths. Somehow, though, One Man Band Man is a good album, though by no means a great one. As great as "It's Me, Bitches" might be, it doesn't exactly give the impression that Swizz Beatz would be capable of making a good album. ![]() "It's Me, Bitches" is a forceful and mindless dumb-out classic, and it feels like a glorious fluke, the sort of success that could not possibly repeat itself. Any actual rapper would have a hell of a time navigating this minefield, but Swizz just plays hypeman for himself, screaming catchphrases and adding to the clutter rather than trying to stay above it. The track keeps interrupting itself, flying apart and then back together before ending in a great incendiary scratch-solo. The song is a delirious burst of energy, oscillating synth-blips and churning martial strings hammering away while sirens scream and drums shatter. On that track, he huffs and puffs, grunting a lot and saying absolutely nothing, repeating the same verses twice, attempting to make a hook out of "chillin' in my Beamer, listening to 'Ether'" despite the fact that "Beamer" doesn't even come close to rhyming with "Ether." And yet "It's Me, Bitches" is one of the best rap singles of the year. "It's Me, Bitches", the Swizz solo single that hit radio early in the year, is a total mess. His clanging, anthemic keyboard-beats were one of the main forces behind the late-90s rise of the Ruff Ryders crew, and more recently he's kept buys churning out dense, furious club-bangers for the likes of Beyonce and T.I. Swizz Beatz is one of the most dependable big-name producers in rap. ![]() ![]() ![]() It allows more days of consecutive family time and is more accommodating for second jobs. So the question comes back to the 48/96 shift and whether it is a good shift schedule - and the answer (based on the current literature) is "it depends." A call could come at any moment, so people are not necessarily getting the deep, restorative sleep that the body requires. ![]() On the other hand, as most will readily report, the sleep at the firehouse is usually a lighter sleep. On one hand, there is a benefit in that personnel can get some rest. Rather, they are allowed to sleep between calls and only have to be awake if they are needed. At a hospital, those treating patients or staffing an ER have to be awake and alert all night.įor most of the fire and EMS community, that is not the case. That’s because of the different requirements and tasks. While the information is useful, and the short- and long-term considerations seen in health care settings should be considered, it is a challenge to apply the findings of health care settings directly to the fire service. In fact, the organizations that oversee regulations about time limits of medical residents has experimented with limiting the hours residents are allowed to work consecutively to improve safety. Science also tells us that shift work is generally bad for your health because it interrupts the body’s natural rhythm for sleep and often leads to chronic sleep disturbance.Ī review of literature presented by the International Association of Fire Chiefs outlined several risks and concerns related to shift work - mostly based on the literature available about residents and physicians. Science also tells us that sleep deprivation leads to increased risk of accidents, is related to depression and is related to obesity given it interrupts the peptides that regulate appetite. When at its extremes, impairment from sleep deprivation has been found to be similar to alcohol intoxication. It also impairs attention, makes you more forgetful, makes it harder to concentrate and impairs problem-solving and reasoning. ![]() ![]() ![]() With mechanics like seek, conjure, and perpetual introduced, which use Arena to keep track of things that would be difficult to do on paper, Historic diverged from tabletop play in a significant way for the first time.Īn even bigger change came in December 2021, when Alchemy was introduced. Now Historic is less the 'Standard Plus', and more the Legends of Runeterra or Gwent competitor. That changed with the launch of Historic Horizons in July 2021, which introduced digital-exclusive mechanics to the game. For years, Historic was simply the 'every card in Arena' format, and developed its own fans and metagame. This means cards that left legality in Standard could still be played here, giving life to decks long after they rotated out. #QUICK DRAFT FORGOTTEN REALMS GUIDE FREE#These are much more focused and involved games than Unranked, where you're free to experiment with decks and work out what you like in a consequence-free environment.Īt its launch, Historic was MTG Arena's non-rotating format. Between each game in a Traditional round, you are free to swap cards between your deck and your 15-card sideboard.Īrena also splits Best-of-One and Traditional into Ranked and Unranked modes. Traditional, on the other hand, more follows the tabletop rules of being a best-of-three game. As the name suggests, best-of-one is a one-off game between you and an opponent, and it comes to an end when one player loses. Dungeons & Dragons: Adventures in the Forgotten RealmsĪrena splits Standard into two kinds, Best-of-One and Traditional. The next rotation will be with the launch of Dominaria United in Q3 of 2022, when Zendikar Rising, Kaldheim, Strixhaven: School of Mages, and Dungeons & Dragons: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms all move out of the format. In 2021, with the launch of Innistrad: Midnight Hunt in late September, the annual rotation took place and Throne of Eldraine, Theros: Beyond Death, Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths and Core 2021 all rotated out. Every year, around the launch of the early Autumn set, the four oldest sets in Standard are rotated out and are not longer legal. ![]() Rotation can be tricky to follow at times. Though this is a barrier to entry for some people, it also allows the format to remain fresh and prevent any particularly high-power sets (like the recently rotated out Throne of Eldraine) from completely dominating the metagame. Standard is notable as being one of a handful of rotating formats, meaning cards will eventually leave the format and no longer become legal. Standard is Magic's 'premiere' format, being the one most sets are primarily designed to support. ![]() ![]() First-order, it seems obviously terrible, both of the companies that (deliberately) practice it and for their hapless customers.īut second-order (and beyond), particularly from the perspective of the companies, I'm less sure what's best, or if there even is a global, objective 'best'.Ĭonsider the most radically distant point you can imagine in 'self-supporting human group' configuration space, that's still capable of making something like a MacBook. ![]() I find planned obsolescence to be fascinating. ![]() macOS is still the better alternative to Windows, but the wow factor of "It just works!" is becoming rare and bug fatigue is creeping in. Small quantum mechanical fluctuations in the initial state lead to a scale-invariant temperature anisotropies in the hot radiation. But, from the effective perspective, the same decay corresponds to the heating of the Universe at the end of inflation. The stringy state ultimately decays, possibly by a process akin to Hawking radiation, and undergoes a transition into a phase of hot radiation. From this effective perspective, the state describes a period of string-scale inflation of minimal duration. This leads to a partially equivalent description in which the pressure appears to be negative and equal in magnitude to the energy density, as if the energy-momentum tensor was that of a cosmological constant. If one nevertheless insists on an effective semiclassical description of this state, she can do so by ignoring the entropy. These relations imply a maximally large entropy density and, therefore, a state that cannot be described by a semiclassical spacetime geometry. The entropy density in this state is equal to the square root of the energy density in Planck units, while the pressure is positive and equal to the energy density. This state resolves the big-bang singularity by replacing the past of the hot big-bang Universe and sets inflationary initial conditions for the subsequent evolution of the thermal radiation and the semiclassical cosmological geometry. Such a state can be described in terms of a state of closed, interacting, fundamental strings in their high-temperature Hagedorn phase, which constitutes a novel microscopic model for the state of the Universe when it is at the highest sustainable temperature. We propose that the initial state of the Universe was an isotropic state of maximal entropy. ![]() ![]() ![]() Peaches, melon, watermelon, pineapple, strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries are all delicious! That said, sometimes albums have emotional connections that create or destroy perceptions of its value. It has to be in your collection if it isn’t already. ![]() I am in no way a fan of ballads on hard rock albums, but every once in awhile, one hooks me, and “The Ballad of Jayne” has always been a fave of mine.Ĭocked And Loaded is an example of a classic pure sleaze album, at a time when pure sleaze albums were a dime a dozen. Finally, betraying the over-the-top sleaziness of every other song, “The Ballad of Jayne” is a truly beautiful ballad, from the production to the performance, to the execution. The song is silly in the sense that back in the day, sometimes bands would take themselves too seriously, even when it was silly. “Give A Little” was always a fun stomp that my band would sometimes cover. The two songs I skipped over above were so that I could highlight them on their own. “17 Crash” is a killer, and I hear its tempo and style re-created many times in more recent releases by newer bands. Not saying they’re bad, but just that I’d passed them by so many times over the years, they were forgotten. Similarly, “Magdalaine” is a tad White Lion. I remember the video for “Never Enough” as being a bit pretentious for the time, kinda comparing themselves to The Beatles… but who cares, the song kicks ass on many levels mostly by being a fun hard rock tune. “Malaria” is a bit Mötley Crüe, but that’s OK. Kelly Nickels’ bass line opening “Sleazy Come, Easy Go” identifies the song as something dirty, but in a fun way. The way the tempo picks up near the end… wow! And doesn’t “Rip And Tear” easily rank up there as a defining song of the LA gutter band era? That interlude works beautifully between the guitars and vocals. Seamlessly mixing into “Slap In The Face”, the sleaze is dripping out of the speakers. I have always contended that Extreme’s Pornograffiti was one of the best productions of the era, but Cocked And Loaded sure comes close. I love how the album kicks off with “Letting Go.” At just over a minute, the track tells you exactly what to expect over the next 55 minutes. ![]() Every riff, bass note, hi-hat flourish pops hard. That may be, but boy does it sound beautiful. Some would say the album is a tad overproduced… too slick for the material. I’ll add that on my 90 minute Maxell tape, the flip side was Long Cold Winter by Cinderella, so needless to say, the cassette rarely left my deck. Feelgood had minimal impact on me compared to this. I rank this album right up there with Guns N’ Roses’ Appetite For Destruction and Skid Row‘s self-titled debut. In less than a year, Cocked And Loaded was certified gold in the US, with over 500,000 units sold.Ĭocked And Loaded lands directly in the middle of my own personal exploration of sleaze metal, so yeah, I have a soft spot for it.
